DIY Camera Bellows Kit success story #2

I received these pictures from Colin P, of Alaska, one of my  clients for the DIY Custom Camera Bellows Kit

Colin wrote, "it looks and works great!".  He assembled these bellows with the kit which was created based on the dimensions he provided.

The camera is a beautiful 4x5 Gundlach, Colin fully restored himself.

  1. I know this partially off topic, and it's great to see that you're generating income with the bellows and ground glass.

Have you considered making backs and ground glass holders in different sizes as a step to the whole camera production, as well as possibly the components for film holders.

In most cases, the cost and rarity of these cameras and parts, prevent people from trying less common formats.

From what I've seen of the whole camera prototypes - your accuracy and design skills are exceptional. Then you could also provide the bellows patterns to suit.

For example I've an older Arca Swiss monorail. Attaching a different format back is incredibly simple, with the movements, swing, shift and tilt, in the base.

I'd love 4"x10" and even 7"x17" backs and holders for this, but both parts are rare, expensive and backs not usually available as separate items.

Assembling film holders isn't difficult, cutting the parts to fine tolerance is.

  2. Hi Glenn,

Thank you for the nice words and the feedback. I did consider what you suggest, and so far I have not been able to make it financially possible. The backs are the most expensive components of the camera and I'm not sure I could sell the volume required to make it cost efficient. Still working on it though.
